Hello Jiu-Jitsu Family! I am glad to know you are on your Jiu-Jitsu journey, which probably brought you here. In any sport there is specific etiquettes. Take golf for instance, I was the guy driving the golf cart on the putting green. I learned the embarrassing way by getting yelled at from the people behind me. We all know that embarrassing moment when we did not know the proper etiquettes for Jiu-Jitsu. This blog will be the best guide for any Jiu-Jitsu practitioner that is new or has not been properly introduced to the Jiu-Jitsu etiquettes.
To "kick it off" the most common mistake is wearing shoes/sandals on the mat. The mats are expensive and they need to stay clean for hygiene purposes. Another common mistake is not washing your Gi enough. The proper etiquette is to wash your Gi after a class or roll. This tip will not only help you with hygiene, but will save you from being the "stinky Gi guy". No one wants to roll with the stinky Gi guy! Speaking about hygiene; one should cut their nails, shower up, tape up any cuts, wash hands, and deodorant wouldn't hurt. Now all these things above may seem like common sense, but you would be very surprised. The cool part is you have read this far; therefore, you will not come across any embarrassing moments... well at least in the Jiu-Jitsu etiquettes realm. The main goal is to save you from an embarrassing moment, which of course we are human and it will happen to some of us. Overall this is our Jiu-Jitsu family and our biggest goal is to learn with each other! Pass this knowledge down and lets roll...
